Pneumatic expanding shafts with lugs are used for unwinding and winding material on and from core (reel).
Pneumatic expanding shafts with lugs are designed for use with cores having a wide range of diameters. Lug shafts are used for operation with high loads of the material being wound or unwound.
The principle of operation involves increasing pressure in a rubber inflatable tube located directly beneath the lugs. Lugs expand, increasing the shaft diameter and securely clamping the core. This allows for transmission of torque from the shaft to the core. Lug shafts have a single central inflatable tube with a circular cross-section.
Pneumatic expanding shafts with lugs, unlike airshafts with strips, are designed for winding and unwinding of ONLY a single core (reel). The lug version is used when higher torque, higher load capacity, and/or greater expansion are required.
Depending on the needs, a variety of options are available, including:
- rotating airshafts, i.e., with internal bearings that allow the journals to rotate independently from the airshaft body;
- airshafts with double expansion, i.e., with greater expansion capacity, allowing for cooperation with a wider range of core diameters;
- airshafts with mechanical expansion, i.e., expansion is achieved by rotating the knob (and is not pneumatically actuated).
